WHAT IS THE KONMARI METHOD™?
Rather than clearing the clutter by room or space, in the KonMari™ method you declutter based on category. Created by Marie Kondo, the method was first introduced in Japan. Marie helped people organize their homes using the method and no one returned to a state of clutter again. In addition to a proven decluttering service, Marie noticed that her client’s lives changed dramatically. “Once you have experienced what it’s like to have a truly ordered house, you’ll feel your whole world brighten. Never again will you revert to clutter.”
After writing “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and “Spark Joy”, Marie started training people in the US to share the method. Yuriko, the certified consultant of Joy & Space, attended Marie’s first training session in the U.S.
In Marie Kondo’s method you tidy or clean the clutter by category rather than by rooms in your home. The categories are arranged from easiest to hardest, starting with clothes and ending with sentimental items. You can also focus on sub-categories, such as shirts or socks, to make each category less overwhelming.
In addition to tidying or decluttering by category, the KonMari Method™ encourages you to choose what to keep with intention and based on how you feel. You keep only the things that you love, the things that speak to your heart. The items that spark joy.
When you use this life-changing Japanese clutter organizing method you are engaging in a practice of mindfulness. Your KonMari journey is a practice of choosing what you want in your life and discarding the rest with gratitude.
Before you start to go through your closet and junk drawers, there are few overall guidelines to follow:
Imagine your ideal lifestyle
Develop a tidy mindset (learn more on this page)
Finish discarding first
Practice gratitude, before discarding or donating, sincerely thank each item for serving its purpose.
Tidy or declutter by category, not location. (Start by gathering all your clothes together.)
Declutter in order
Ask yourself if each item sparks joy
